The Marble Falls High School boys golf team finished seventh at the Class 4A Region III tournament April 16-17 at the Bearkat Golf Course in Huntsville.
The Mustangs shot a 346-352–698 to finish seventh overall in the team standings.
Sophomore Camilo Montez led with an 81-81–162 for 12th overall followed by senior Porter Vinson with an 82-84–166 to finish 15th, senior Ross Oelschleger scored an 85-86–171 for 26th overall, freshman John Srnensky shot a 97-104–201 to finish 66th, and sophomore Beckett Berkman scored a 104-101–205 for 72nd.
Head coach Adley Canales noted Montez has been steady in his performances for months, the sign of a mentally tough golfer.
“Camilo has been constant for us all year,” he said. “With him being only a sophomore, he has grown into a leader with his play, and he has the opportunity to compete in big tournaments. This experience can only help him over the course of the next two years.”
Meanwhile the program says good-bye to Vinson and Oelschleger, two veterans who have helped the Mustangs advance to regional and state tournaments during their time. Canales said they have been the veterans the program needed.
“Porter and Ross have also been two constants we can count on, and we have leaned on them all year,” he said. “They both were members of our last team that qualified for state (in 2023). That experience really helped the others who have not competed in a regional tournament before. It also helped having them because they were true leaders for our program in their work ethic, attitude and dedication towards being successful.”
Simply, playing at a regional tournament is much different than at other events. Golfers are introduced and more fans are in attendance. That environment isn’t replicated anywhere else. The coach said having gone through it will only help the underclassmen.
“Being able to have the underclassman experience competing at regionals is huge,” he said. “That is experience that you can only get by being there and competing.”
District 24-4A member Lampasas was fourth overall with a 666.
